Sleep Trivia - Do You Know How Important It Is?

How many hours of sleep does your body need? What body hormones affect sleep? What are the symptoms of sleep deprivation?
In honor of Sleep Week , join us for interactive trivia to try to answer these questions and test your knowledge on the importance of sleep.

Sleep and Learning Week Ambassador

The Academic Success Center at Wayne State will be hosting a sleep and learning week where they will put together a set of online and in-person events that explain the importance of sleeping and its role in learning. Nu Rho Psi are given the opportunity to join as ambassadors who would:
Help with marketing of sleep week
Assist with online and live sessions (checking in people, monitoring chats for questions)
Being an active participant in the working committee group meetings (sharing your input regarding session topics, marketing strategies, and other agenda items).

Volleyball Tournament
Friday, November 4th; 6-9 PM; Hype Athletics in Dearborn Heights
We will be collaborating with Mission Possible Organization (MPO).
Tickets: $10/player or $5/spectator

Conversations on Diversity and Equity Issues in STEM

We are excited to announce our first event of the Fall 2022 semester! We are proud to host Dominique L. La Barrie and Dr. Stephanie Hawkes to discuss the impact that discrimination has on scholars from marginalized communities, how to buffer against these experiences, and the need for diversifying STEM fields. This event will begin with a presentation led by the speakers and end with a discussion and Q&A.
Study Smarter, Not Harder with Nu Rho Psi

In the midst of exam season, what better way to set yourself up for success than to learn how to study from our study skills expert. Kalyn will be with us only during the first half hour, so don’t miss out!
The remainder of the event will be open to group studying to apply those skills with the help of tutors specialized in the Neuroscience courses (chemistry and biology).

Surgical Specialty Marathon: Neurosurgery

Join us on Wednesday, March 9th at 6PM EST via Zoom, where we are featuring Dr. Perez Cruet, the Vice President and Professor Director of the Invasive Spine Surgery and Spine Program in the Department of Neurological Surgery at William Beaumont. This will be an informal Q&A session, where we will discuss the background, journey, and challenges of a neurosurgeon. The audience will get the chance to ask any questions to the panelist and will obtain life-long skills necessary for pre-health careers.
Brain Day in Detroit

Brain Day in Detroit is an annual event held in conjunction with Brain Awareness Week that has been held for over 20 years. Volunteers are needed for this event to assist with general help (greeting attendees, organization), with Nu Rho Psi's activities, arts and crafts area, etc! This is a great opportunity to become involved in an event that communicates science to the general public in a very fun way!
March Study Day

Calm Your Brain with Nu Rho Psi
Wednesday March 30; 5 PM EST Student Center Hilberry BC; 15 Points
The mental health event will consist of a meditation and mindfulness exercise, a movement exercise, and art therapy experiential. Through each experiential, participants will learn the ‘why’ behind the ‘what’ and gain scientifically-informed stress coping skills that can be used in various settings participants find themselves in. This event will be led by Lana Grasser who is a PhD candidate in the Translational Neuroscience Graduate Program at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine and a graduate student member of our chapter. At the end of the event, we will gift different items to attendees!

Nu Rho Psi Annual Member Meeting

Each year Nu Rho Psi holds a meeting/social during the Annual Society for Neuroscience meeting for members and all others who are interested in learning about the honor society. Please join us for a celebration of all those who received Nu Rho Psi Awards in 2020-21, learn about opportunities to study neuroscience abroad during the summer of 2022, and help the society by providing suggestions for how we may best serve our membership and support our local chapters. The keynote speaker will be Jennifer Kubota, Ph.D. of the University of Delaware, and her keynote address is The Neuroscience of Racial Bias.

We will be hosting a Toxicologist/Pharmacologist that works at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Maryland. The guest speaker is Dr. Kevin Snyder, PhD, whose academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience. He will discuss how he attained the position that he is currently in and will share tips on pursuing scientific careers in government. At the end, you will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Journal Club

Each session will consist of three 10 minute presentations followed by a 15 minute discussion session, which will be available to sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Arts and Crafts with Nu Rho Psi
Monday, September 20th, 2021; 5 PM EST; Student Center
A social event where all Wayne State students get together and meet in an artsy neuroscience fashion. During this event, we will provide mini canvases for a “draw off” - in 4 separate stations, we will have members expressing their creativity through a series of different neuroscience-based materials (includes drawing a neuron, brain, nervous system, memory, etc.). After a given time limit, whoever has the most creative displayed drawing in the station wins a prize.

Professors at Wayne State Panel: A Reflection on University during a Pandemic

The Faculty Panel will host our very own Nu Rho Psi faculty members including: Dr. Conti, Dr. Brummelte, Dr. Stanley, Dr. Bowen, and Dr. Perrine. They will be speaking on their experiences inside and outside of the lab as a researcher and teacher. There will also be time for questions at the end.

We will also discuss volunteering opportunities, new fundraisers for National Doctors Day, the tentative schedule for the summer research program for high school students, and announcing the available board and committee positions for the 2021-2022 academic year applications. Following the general body meeting we will have breakout rooms with your mentorship group to reflect on events attended this month and plans for March.
A Medical Tour around the Globe
Saturday, March 6th at 11:00am EST via Zoom
Have you ever wondered how health care systems operate in other countries around the globe? What kind of technologies do they use, do they rely on modern or traditional medicine, what the timeline to being a physician looks like, how accessible it is to citizens, and of course, how they handled the pandemic and their vaccine status? Join us, to answer these questions and more, on a medical tour around the globe for an in-depth exploration of what medicine looks like in five different countries. We will host doctors from India, Kenya, Lebanon, Turkey and the United States for a discussion about their experience with the healthcare system in their country, and we will ask a variety of questions in order to get a grasp of what it is like there to compare, contrast, and most importantly learn from each other. In the end, you will have the opportunity to ask them any questions you may have.

The executive board of Nu Rho Psi will be hosting a one hour drop in coffee hour to chat with our members interested in the upcoming available leadership positions for the 2021-2022 Academic Year. They will answer any questions you may have about the application and interview process, qualifications, responsibilities, and anything else. Traumatic Brain injury (TBI) Awareness Event

Everyone needs to know about traumatic brain injury, because it’s more common than people realize and knows no demographic boundaries. In honor of March being Brain Injury Awareness month, we are honored to host Dr. Alana Conti PhD, from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, to present her research on traumatic brain injury which has recently received over one million dollars of funding from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research and Development Service in 2020. Join to learn more about the lab research from Dr. Alana Conti and her lab team to better understand this important topic and what a dynamic lab looks like. Afterwards, we will be joined by the president of the Traumatic Brain Injury Association of Michigan for a presentation about how we can play a role in the preventative, advocacy, and volunteerism in this important issue.

Dismantling Systemic Racism in Medical and Academic Settings Discussion
Thursday, February 4th, 6:00 to 8:00 pm EST via Zoom
We will be starting February, Black History Month, with an event to help us learn more about how to provide more diligent patient care to all demographics in the future. Two DMC physicians, Dr.Uddyback and Dr.McIntyre Leon, and two Wayne State University school of Medicine professors, Dr. Arash Javanbakht and Dr. Tanja Jovanovic, will be speaking about systemic racism in the medical and academic settings. This talk will address serious issues of racism. They will speak about ways we as pre-med students can first recognize and then aid in lessening the systematic racism.

Understanding the business aspects of healthcare is growingly becoming a necessary skill as a physician from starting their own practice, attaining an administrative role at the hospital, to commercializing a new med-tech idea. Wayne State’s School of Medicine is in the process of establishing a new one based on the dean’s vision of its importance to adapt to the healthcare systems in the 21st century. The chair of pediatrics at Wayne State's school of medicine, Herman Grey, M.D., M.B.A alongside three MD/MBA students from other institutions will join us for a discussion about the MD/MBA program. Our hosts will narrate their journey into this field, everyday lifestyle, curriculum, and the different career pathways this dual degree will enable its candidate to get a head start on. They will also give advice on how to become a competitive applicant and the audience will have the opportunity to ask them any questions they may have in the end.
Proximie: Augmented Reality Surgery Talk

Dr. Nadine Hachach Haram, from the United Kingdom who is a Plastic Surgeon, TEDX speaker, and the founder of Proximie, will join us for a talk about augmented reality surgery and how it is possible for a surgeon to virtually join an operating room in the opposite side of the world and remotely guide the surgery in order to save the patient's life. This new technology ensures that all individuals, especially in developing countries, have access to high-quality surgical healthcare. Join us to dive deep into what the future of surgery looks like with this innovative artificial intelligence million-dollar company.
